Establishment of a sequentially coupled cascade utilization of perennial ryegrass

(German title: Etablierung einer sequentiell gekoppelten Kaskadennutzung von Deutschem Weidelgras)

The aim of this project is to improve the raw material efficiency and added value of grassland areas with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) on a variety-specific and site-differentiated basis with the help of an adapted cutting regime and subsequent material and energy cascade utilization. To this end, both the yield and the ingredients are to be optimized for different possible uses. An important component of the project includes the investigation of the value chain of different varieties of Lolium perenne along a biorefinery and the development of new material uses from the fractionation into further usable components (e.g. monosaccharides). The resulting residues are then examined with regard to their potential for energy use or alternative uses. The results of the investigations will ultimately be used to provide the farmer with a model-based prediction option in order to control the quality parameters or ingredients of the grassland growth for subsequent processing and to identify utilization options for different crop qualities. In addition, knowledge for future grass breeding of important plant properties and ingredients for material and energy use will be gained.
