School internship @ BioVT

In January, Jann Willems was able to get a taste of the world of bioprocess engineering as part of a school internship. Each day he accompanied an employee and carried out laboratory work independently. For example, he

• observed various microorganisms under the microscope, counted the cells and calculated the cell number concentration
• extracted photopigments from algae and cyanobacteria using different solvents
• determined the content of heavy metals in river water samples using photometric analyses
