GewässerCampus-Workshop as part of the MINT teacher training program of the PfalzMetall Foundation

How clean are our local waters? - This question was addressed by 10 teachers who took part in the BioVT workshop at the RPTU in Kaiserslautern on the 8th of November as part of the PfalzMetall Foundation's annual further training course for teachers.

During the 2-hour workshop on the GewässerCampus project, the teachers learned how they can carry out an independent water analysis with their students on local water bodies (e.g. swimming lakes, rivers or streams, ponds). The aim is to enable students to combine ecological knowledge from the theoretical preparation lessons with the field experiment. The samples taken from the watercourse can be analyzed on site using photometric analysis methods to determine the concentrations of certain water parameters. In addition, an online platform is provided where students can document their test results and share them with other participants at the GewässerCampus. The portable photometer developed for the field experiments is suitable for explaining the basic principle of photometry as measurement method to students in an easily understandable way thanks to the photometer’s open design.
