Taster Days for School Students at the Department of Bioprocess Engineering
In June, the Department of Bioprocess Engineering at the Kaiserslautern campus of RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau once again hosted three Taster Days for interested students in grades 11 and 12. A total of 88 upper secondary students from advanced and basic chemistry or biology courses in Kirchheimbolanden, Mainz, and Schweich an der Mosel took the opportunity to experience university life and gain exciting insights into the field of bioprocess engineering.
Following an introductory lecture, the participants explored the department’s laboratories in small groups and independently carried out three hands-on experiments:
- Colorful Diversity – Pigments from cyanobacteria and algae
- Hands-on Molecular Biology – DNA extraction from fruits and vegetables and creation of a microbial fingerprint
- Process Analytics – Calculation and preparation of glucose solutions and sugar analysis using the Reflectoquant® system
During the lunch break, a free meal was provided in the university cafeteria. In addition, students received information about the Bio- and Chemical Engineering degree program.
