Taster Day for Students at the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering
On November 5 and 20, 100 students from the advanced biology courses at the Emanuel-Felke-Gymnasium Bad Sobernheim, the Leibniz-Gymnasium Pirmasens, and the Eduard-Spranger-Gymnasium Landau had the opportunity to get a taste of university life at the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering at RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau and gain exciting insights into the field of bioprocess engineering.
After an introductory lecture, the participants explored the research group’s laboratories in small groups and carried out three hands-on experiments:
- Colorful diversity – extraction of photopigments from cyanobacteria and algae
- Molecular biology you can touch – extraction of DNA from fruits and vegetables and creation of a microbial fingerprint
- Process analytics – calculation and preparation of glucose solutions and sugar analysis using the Reflectoquant® system
During the lunch break, a free meal was offered in the cafeteria. The students also received information about the Bio- and Chemical Engineering degree program.
