Taster Day for Students at the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering
On October 7, the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering at the Kaiserslautern campus of RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau hosted its first autumn taster day for interested upper secondary school students. 36 12th-grade students from the advanced biology courses of Leibniz-Gymnasium Neustadt took the opportunity to experience university life and gain exciting insights into the field of bioprocess engineering.
After an introductory lecture, the participants explored the department’s laboratories in small groups and conducted three hands-on experiments:
- Colorful diversity – pigments from cyanobacteria and algae
- Hands-on molecular biology – DNA extraction from fruits and vegetables and creation of a microbial fingerprint
- Process analytics – calculation and preparation of glucose solutions and sugar analysis using the Reflectoquant® system
During the lunch break, a free meal was offered in the university cafeteria. In addition, the students received information about the Bio- and Chemical Engineering degree program.
