Taster Day for School Students at the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering
On May 28, the Bioprocess Engineering Department at the Kaiserslautern campus of RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau hosted its first taster day of the year. A total of 29 interested students from Grade 12 advanced biology courses at Gymnasium am Rittersberg in Kaiserslautern and Hans-Purrmann-Gymnasium in Speyer took the opportunity to experience university life and gain exciting insights into the field of bioprocess engineering.
Following an introductory lecture, the participants explored the department’s laboratories in small groups and independently carried out three hands-on experiments:
- A Colorful Diversity – Pigment extraction from cyanobacteria and algae
- Hands-On Molecular Biology – DNA extraction from fruits and vegetables, as well as the creation of a microbial fingerprint
- Process Analytics – Calculation and preparation of glucose solutions and sugar analysis using the Reflectoquant® system
During the lunch break, the students were offered a complimentary meal in the university cafeteria. In addition, they received information about the degree program in Biochemical and Chemical Engineering. Further information about our programs and activities for teachers and school classes can be found here.
