New project: Biotechnological production of (R)-α-ionone
Ionones are plant-derived fragrance compounds with a floral aroma, widely used in perfumes, cosmetics, and food. Among them, (R)-α-ionone, the key aroma molecule of raspberries, is especially valuable – yet its natural extraction or chemical synthesis is costly, inefficient, and unsustainable. Phytowelt has developed a biotechnological process to produce enantiopure (R)-α-ionone – sustainable, eco-friendly, and of the highest purity. Despite its premium market price, demand is growing rapidly, driven by the trend toward natural ingredients.
The current research project ENANTIONONE aims to increase yields, reduce costs, and improve process control through innovative analytical systems. This will strengthen competitiveness and lay the foundation for establishing a dedicated production facility. With this innovation, BioVT and Phytowelt are helping to advance sustainability in the flavor and fragrance industry.
