15 Years of the “Lautrer Kaiserbrauer” Brewing Club
In July 2011, a bonded beer warehouse was established at the former University of Kaiserslautern. This marked the official beginning of a success story that has now brought together students, staff, and friends of the university for 15 years.
The “Lautrer Kaiserbrauer” Brewing Club originated from an idea developed by members of the Bio-Process Engineering Group. Since then, the initiative has evolved into a vibrant community in which scientific principles, practical craftsmanship, and teamwork come together.
Over the past 15 years, several hundred students have learned the fundamentals of brewing in our brewing seminar. From milling and mashing to lautering, boiling, fermentation, and maturation, participants experience the entire production process first-hand. At the same time, they gain practical insight into key aspects of bio-process engineering: biological conversion processes, process control, plant operation, and quality assurance all become tangible through brewing.
Over the years, the Brewing Club has produced numerous beers for events at the university, enriching campus life in the process. Its members have continually developed new recipes and undertaken special collaborative projects. One example is “Honey Hops,” a Pilsner-style beer brewed with honey produced by the university’s Beekeeping Club. The Lautrer Kaiserbrauer have also demonstrated their creativity and expertise at student brewing competitions.
In addition to the many batches brewed, it is above all the shared experiences that remain memorable: long brewing days, tastings, university celebrations, competitions, and exchanges between people from different disciplines. We would like to thank all former and current members, supporters, and participants who have brought the Brewing Club to life over the past 15 years. We look forward to many more creative beers, fascinating brewing seminars, and enjoyable brewing days together.
