More about the content

The degree program consists of bridge modules (compulsory elective area 1), compulsory modules, focus areas (compulsory elective area 2), elective modules and the Master's thesis.

Bridge modules (compulsory elective area 1):

As this is an interdisciplinary degree program, the bridging modules ensure that applicants with diverse Bachelor's degrees are brought to a uniform level of knowledge in the essential fundamentals. The bridging modules are selected individually in collaboration with a mentor.

Students with a suitable seven-semester or very suitable six-semester Bachelor's degree can replace all or part of the bridging semester with an internship. The admission criteria for the internships go beyond the knowledge required for admission to the degree program and will also be announced here after approval by the committees.

In order to find a plan for the bridge modules and, if necessary, an internship in good time, the first consultation meetings with the mentors take place at the beginning of the orientation course of the Team - International Affairs RPTU. However, the internship can also be completed later in the Master's degree program or in parallel to the degree program in the form of working student activities (if suitable in terms of content). Before registering for the Master's thesis, the required ECTS for the bridging semester must be completed in full!

Compulsory modules:

The compulsory modules from the field of computer science with an interface to mechanical engineering lay the foundations for scientific computing, visualization and machine learning. The module Modelling, Simulation and Optimization in Process Engineering bridges the gap to process engineering. Here, all students are required to independently apply their programming skills to process engineering problems in a project.

Focus areas (compulsory elective area 2):

In the focus areas, students must choose two out of four currently possible specializations in process engineering. The specializations are Bioprocess Engineering, Fluid Process Engineering, Mechanical Process Engineering and Thermodynamics. The modules within the specializations can be selected from a catalog that is approved by the Faculty Council each semester.

Elective modules:

Further specialization or a look beyond the horizon takes place via elective modules. Here you can choose from further modules from the focus areas in the subject-specific area and from the entire RPTU range in the general elective area. The list of modules in the subject-specific area - like the catalogs of bridge modules and specializations - is approved by the Faculty Council each semester.

Thesis:

The course concludes with a Master's thesis lasting one semester. Supervision is provided by professors from RPTU. Industrial topics/industrial projects for the Master's thesis are only possible in consultation with the supervising professor.

Qualification goals

In the Master's degree program in Digital Process Engineering, students should be trained so that as graduates they

  • have a broad knowledge of the mathematical, scientific and engineering principles of process engineering and related fields, such as energy and environmental engineering;
  • acquire a critical awareness of the latest findings in the field of process engineering; with a focus on knowledge in the areas of data science and physico-chemical modeling and simulation.

Specifically, graduates are able to

  • apply methods of data science (from data acquisition, data handling and analysis to machine learning) to process engineering processes,
  • mathematically model process engineering processes using physico-chemical approaches and carry out corresponding computer simulations,
  • combine methods of data science with those of physico-chemical modeling and simulation and apply them to process engineering processes, whereby the term process engineering processes includes in particular the basic operations of process engineering, but also their connection to processes and the field of bioprocess engineering.

Mobility

In the Master's program, a stay abroad is advisable in all four semesters and is expressly supported by the department. A learning agreement should be concluded before the stay abroad to ensure that the credits from abroad can be recognized. The recognition of academic achievements from studies abroad is carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Lisbon Convention. The department supports all students who wish to spend part of their studies abroad. Sufficient capacities for ERASMUS stays are made available for this purpose. Furthermore, students who would like to go abroad outside of ERASMUS are advised in detail and the possible recognition of achievements abroad is confirmed with Learning Agreements before the stay abroad.
