Reference Software
Web Based Reference Software for Characterisation of Surface Roughness
Motivation
Roughness plays an important role in determining how a real object interacts with its environment. It’s a good predictor of the performance of mechanical components, but it’s difficult and expensive to control in manufacturing. The evaluation of surface roughness on technical functional areas and the comparison of roughness parameters with tolerances is an integral part of industrial quality assurance.
Aim
This project explores the development of web based reference software for characterisation of surface roughness. The aim of the project is to develop user friendly software which makes the evaluation methods for verification of surface characteristics easier for clients. The Institute of measurement and sensor technology (MTS) is working in collaboration with the Physikalisch Technischen Bundesanstalt-Braunschweig, the German NMI, on the implementation of appropriate algorithms. The algorithms used in this software are based on the International ISO standards. Most of the software used in industrial measuring instruments may give variations or differences in the parameters calculated. Such variations can be verified using the proposed Reference Software. The evaluation of surface roughness is carried out in four major steps such as data capture, data align, data filtering and parameter calculation respectively.
