Mechanical Process Engineering III

Simulation methods and software in fluid and particle technology

Dr.-Ing. Kilian Schmidt

Course in winter term 2024/25

OLAT:  MVT 3: Simulationsmethoden und -software
in der Fluid- und Partikeltechnologie

Content:

Lecture: In 1 semester hour per week, the most important models and equations for the calculation of fluid and particle flows are presented as well as the open source software, which can be used to perform the corresponding calculations and simulations.
Exercise: In 2 semester hours per week, corresponding case studies are worked through on a Linux system.

  • Python for simple calculations and curve plots
  • OpenFOAM for fluid flows and single particle trajectories
  • LIGGGHTS for particle collectives
  • CFDEM for coupled simulations of fluids and particle collectives
  • Pre- and post-processing with HELYX-OS, Salome, ParaView (...)

In addition to the theory of the calculation and simulation of fluid and particle flows, the course also teaches particle flows, the main focus is on how to apply these with free open source software on a Linux system.

Requirements:

MVT 1 or 2 and basic knowledge of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and/or particle simulation (discrete element method, DEM) are advantageous, but not essential.
