This research project deals with the deformation of filter media during a fluid flow process. Therefore, experiments as well as numerical simulations are carried out. A mechanical investigation of filter media properties provides the data that can be used to define the material properties in the simulations. The media, which are used for the investigations are typically used for solid-liquid separations or liquid-liquid processes. Most of them are nonwoven materials consisting of randomly oriented fibers. Experiments and simulations are performed for the investigation of the mechanical properties in operation to reveal the in-use parameters in contrast to the standard mechanical tests.
