Assessment of fatigue strength taking cyclical hardening and softening processes into account – experimental studies

The aim of the project was to use experimental studies and advanced material models for in depth analysis of fatigue behavior in the elastic-plastic range, taking into account hardening and softening processes, and to record changes in microstructure due to fatigue processes.

Stress-strain hysteresis from fatigue tests on steel X6CrNiNb1810 controlled by total strain (left) and parameters for modeling cyclic deformation behavior (right)

The research was carried out as part of a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials (IWM) in Freiburg.
