Doctorate - What can I expect?

A doctorate is usually the result of a project lasting several years, during which the doctoral candidate acquires specialist knowledge in a specific subject area through independent, scientific work and demonstrates this in the form of a dissertation. The research work is documented in the form of a dissertation in order to give other academics access to the research findings.

The doctoral candidate makes a contribution to research and teaching during the doctorate. In addition to working on the doctoral topic, workshops are organized in research and cooperation projects, national and international conferences are attended and publications are produced. In the field of teaching, the doctoral student supervises lectures and excursions and assists in the conduct of exercises and examinations.

Why do a doctorate?

A doctorate offers advantages not only in the field of science and industry, but also in terms of your own career and personal development. The contribution to the progress of knowledge in science enables the doctoral student to create new knowledge and to expand their own specialist and methodological knowledge in a targeted manner. Individual development, for example through seminars and networking with companies and other doctoral students, enables them to enter a scientific career or a management position in industry.
